Bullet Holes in Kyoto Imperial Palace

160-year-old bullet holes.

This is Hamaguri Gomon Gate in the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Another name is Kin-Mon Gate.

This gate has a lot of old bullet holes. It was caused by a rebellion incident in August 20, 1864, which is called Kin-Mon Incident/Rebellion. This incident caused a big fire which destroyed more than half of the imperial capital Kyoto. It led Japan into a civil war and modernization followingly.

These massive bullet holes are an important milestone for modern Japan and that’s why it’s preserved as a witness of history.
